How To Start Your Online Business Today

The four step process of on-line wealth creation.

Getting your online business off the ground starts by choosing a niche. Think of it as the direction for your business, a theme that runs through everything you do, from the blog posts you publish to the products you’ll eventually sell. This isn’t just about identifying what sells; it’s about finding a space where you can develop your identity and offer people something special.

The first task in pinpointing a profitable niche is research. You’re going to look for a sweet spot where demand meets your own interests and expertise. Grab a pen and paper and make a start by listing topics you’re passionate about or have knowledge about. This is important because when the going gets tough, it’s YOUR passion that’ll push YOU through.

Now, once you have a list, assess market demand. Tools like Google Trends and keyword research can unveil how many people are interested in your potential niche. Don’t worry too much about a crowded market. Remember, high competition often signals a healthy, in-demand niche.

Aligning your interests and expertise with your niche isn’t just advisable, it’s crucial. You’re planning for the distance, not a sprint. With a niche that resonates with you, you’ll cultivate authentic connections with your audience, and that’s gold.

With a carefully chosen niche, you’re ready to lay the digital cornerstone of your venture: your website. It’s more than just slapping a few web pages together; it’s about constructing an online platform that reflects your brand and supports your growth. Moving into building your website, you’ll be looking at everything from picking the perfect domain name to understanding the nuts and bolts of search engine optimisation (SEO).

Laying the Digital Foundation: Building a Website

First things first. You NEED a website. This is your presence online. This is how you project your brand. This is how you build and maintain trust with your audience.

With that in mind, now I’m going to walk you through the essentials of creating your website: the online hub for YOUR business. This isn’t just about throwing together a few web pages; it’s about building a solid foundation that will engage visitors and get them to stick around.

You’ll want to select the right platform for your website. I’m talking about ease of use, flexibility, and scalability. Whether it’s WordPress, Shopify, or another platform, choose something that resonates with you and your business needs.

Next up, let’s nail the design and branding. Your site should reflect your business identity and make a lasting impression. That means clear navigation, professional layout, and, of course, mobile responsiveness. Remember, a considerable chunk of web traffic comes through smartphones and tablets now.

Now what about getting found? SEO is your golden ticket here. By incorporating SEO best practices from the start, such as using the right keywords and creating quality content, your website stands a better chance at ranking in Google’s search results.

And remember, you’re not just building a website; you’re crafting an experience. The best authors write in a way so that they show and don’t tell their readers. You don’t have to be half as clever with words though, you can use images and videos to show people what your business is all about. This visual content not only makes your website more attractive but also can keep visitors longer on your site, which is great for SEO.

Drawing the Crowd: Mastering Traffic Generation

You’ve built a solid foundation with your website, and now it’s time to get the word out. You’re going to find out about attracting visitors, which is crucial for any online business. Your main goal now is to drive traffic to your website, because what’s a brilliant website if no one’s there to enjoy it, right?

Now what is the lifeline of online business traffic? Google rankings. Getting your site to show up on Google’s first page is like hitting the jackpot. But don’t worry too much about it being a daunting task. There’s a lot happening very quickly in the world of SEO, and I’m here to help you navigate through it. A solid content strategy that’s rich with keywords, full of value, and served fresh regularly will endear Google to your site.

But remember, this isn’t just about Google. You’re going to need a multi-channel strategy to bring in traffic from different sources. This includes leveraging social media platforms, tapping into the power of email marketing, engaging with online communities, and even considering paid ads if you’re up for it. Diversifying your traffic sources ensures stability and a wider audience reach.

Next, we’re going to have a look at how to turn all that traffic into profit in the next section. It’s important to understand that getting visitors to your site is just part of the journey. The real magic happens when you make money from your traffic, and that’s when the full potential of your online business will start to manifest.

We’ve navigated through finding your niche, setting up your digital storefront, and funnelling traffic to your website. Now, you’re going to find out about transforming that traffic into a tangible income stream. It’s not just about drawing in visitors. Once they are on your website, they must act in the way you want them to. This is how your online business will thrive financially.

Affiliate marketing can be a game-changer. You’re effectively promoting products or services from over 550 million options, earning a commission for each sale made through your referral. And yes, you can find products that align perfectly with your niche and audience.

Don’t overlook the power of advertising on your site. With the right approach, ads on your website can contribute significantly to your revenue. Strategically placed, relevant ads enhance user experience and fatten your wallet without requiring direct sales.

Email marketing continues to be a robust tool for making money online. By building a list of subscribers, you’re creating a direct line of communication to pitch products, offer valuable content, and nurture customer relationships. All of these contribute to a healthier bottom line for you.

You may consider selling your own products or venturing into dropshipping. These are fantastic avenues for those looking to take full control over their offerings and profits. Your online business can be the platform for showcasing unique products, tailored to the needs of your audience.

    • Thank you Brenda, these are a couple of good questions. With regard to making your website mobile responsive, in the case of WordPress, most themes nowadays are mobile responsive. If in doubt, check it out. This can be done by viewing your site in developer mode using Ctrl+Shift+I or right-clicking and selecting “Inspect,” then toggling between desktop and mobile display. If your theme is not mobile responsive, get one that is.

As far as paying for traffic goes, the following should help:

      1. Search Engine Advertising (Search Engine Marketing/Pay Per Click): Using platforms like Google Ads and Bing Ads, you can bid on certain keywords associated with your website. Your ads then appear at the top of search engine results pages for those keywords.
      2. Social Media Advertising: Social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest all offer advertising options which enable the targeting of specific demographics, interests, and behaviours.
      3. Display Advertising: Networks like Google Display Network (GDN) enable you to choose where your ads display according to the features of your target audience.
      4. Native Advertising: Native ads blend in with the content on the platform where they’re displayed, i.e., they don’t stand out. They often feature as recommended content on websites, appearing below or beside the article your target audience is reading. They can also appear as “in feed” ads, as part of your news feed on social networks, such as Facebook or Twitter. They can also be served as search and promoted listings that appear at the top of your Google search results, or in the sidebar.
      5. Email Marketing: While not traditionally considered a paid traffic source, you generally have to pay for email marketing tools and strategies to grow your subscriber list and send targeted campaigns to drive repeat traffic to your website.
As you are paying for these traffic sources, make sure that you carefully track and analyse the performance of each to optimize your return on investment (ROI) and ensure you’re effectively reaching your target audience. If it’s not working, drop it!
